Comments about Riedel Vinum Tasting Set:

I've always maintained that it is better to not educate one's palate with respect to wine, because the net result would be spending more money on wine. Here is a way to improve the experience even with inexpensive wine. The manufacturer claims these glasses were designed to bring out the best in different varietals. Well, at least for the reds I have tried, they do work, even to my uneducated palate. True, you could buy a decent bottle of wine for what one of these glasses costs. But in the long run, I think they will have proved a good investment. If I don't watch myself, the next step may be a wine appreciation course. Yikes.
The down side is that these glasses are fragile and will require careful handling when washing, storing and using. In fact, one arrived shattered (see service comments). Reidel makes other versions of these varietal-tailored wine glasses that might be less fragile. On balance I have no regrets, these are worth the cost of the glasses and extra care required.
